Things to Think About

I know we will eventually have to train Baby Boy to sleep better and longer (actually, I'm naively hoping that one night he will just sleep 12 hours and be a great napper and nighttime sleeper from that point on!). I read this post on "crying it out" from Candice and I think it's awesome that she is having good results with her son, who is about the same age as Baby Boy. But I am a wimp about hearing my baby cry. Plus, we have a one-bedroom apartment, so Baby Boy is in our room which would make nighttime cry-it-out sessions pretty harrowing for Hubby and me. Hmm...what's a girl to do?

I enjoy Mountain Mama's nutrition advice--Nutrition 101 (Part 1) and Nutrition 101 (Part 2). I always eat a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, so lately I have been soaking the oats overnight in water with a tablespoon of lemon juice. I would love to start drinking raw milk, and we actually do have local sources, but it's around $6/gallon. Yikes!

Hey Melissa,

It sure makes it harder when you live in an apartment and have only one bedroom. I can understand how that could be hard. But again, I would encourage you not to worry about him sleeping through the night yet until you have established a daytime routine. That's my advice because that's what I've done and it's worked. I have not tried it reversed so I don't know if that works too. If you find that it does, I'd be interested in knowing.
Also, I know a lot of times we have to learn things on our own, but I just want to say that hard work now will be well worth it in the long run, and though it may seem hard now, it will be harder the older he gets.
Okay, well that's my 2 cents!

I agree with Candice. A good daytime routine is pretty imperative to having him sleep well at night.

My newborns would eat every 3 hours during the day, until they were about 6 months old. You also want to make sure he isn't sleeping too much during his naps.

With our first child we had a one bedroom apartment too. When it got to be too much to have him in our rooom anymore I started using a playpen for him to sleep in and set it up in the living room at night...I did this when he was around 4 months old. For naps, I would simply move the playpen into our bedroom, where it was quiet. It worked well for us :-)

I stumbled on your blog and noticed that your son is about the same age as my youngest daughter, Piper. She almost makes it through the night now. I don't know if this will help, but I never turn on lights if she does wake up. Even when she was itty bitty I would always feed her in the dark trying to get her on the same schedule as I am. Now she eats maybe once a night. She is usually sleeping by 10:00 pm or so and then up at 6:00 am to eat, and then up for good at about 8:30 am. She maybe wakes up once in between 10 and 6 but not too often anymore. I don't know if that will help you at all, but maybe once your son realizes that it is night time and he won't always get fed at exactly the time he wants it, he will start to sleep better through the night. I know my friend had the same problem you have and her son who is now 1 1/2 still wakes up during the night--not hungry anymore, but just gets up and starts playing--so it's good that you're trying to change his schedule this young :)
